Solar self-consumption

Home battery with solar panels

A battery can store part of the solar electricity that is not used at the moment of generation. The useful capacity depends on the overlap between your export during sunny hours and your later household demand.

How does a battery work with solar panels?

It measures household flow, stores available solar surplus and supplies stored energy later. An AC-coupled system works alongside the existing solar inverter.

Measure export and later use

The useful overlap is solar energy exported now and electricity bought later. Hourly data reveals that overlap.

Keep the existing inverter

PowerHub ONE works on the AC side, so adding it does not by itself require replacement of the existing solar inverter.

Expect seasonal differences

Solar generation changes through the year. Test capacity against several representative months.

Local export rules still matter

Export compensation, metering and registration differ by country. Check local requirements rather than applying another country's rules.

What to know before you decide

Solar panel battery: storing what you already generate

A solar panel battery does not make the panels produce more. It stores the surplus that would otherwise be exported, so the same kilowatt-hours can be used in the evening instead of at midday. That shift is the whole point, and it means the size of your surplus matters more than the size of your roof.

Because PowerHub ONE is AC-coupled, a battery for solar panels can be added to an existing installation without replacing the solar inverter. Capacity is built from 2.4 kWh modules across five configurations between 2.4 and 12.0 kWh, so the storage can follow the surplus you actually measure.

Checking whether a battery for solar panels is worth it

Look at hourly export data across several months rather than an annual total. Summer and winter surpluses differ enormously, and a battery can never store more solar energy than is genuinely left over.

Also separate energy from power. Extra modules raise stored kWh; the connection mode sets the limit at up to 800 W on a suitable 230 V outlet, or up to 2.4 kW peak on a dedicated circuit installed by a qualified electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Answers for an evidence-based decision

No. PowerHub ONE is AC-coupled and works alongside the existing inverter.

Not necessarily. Capacity, state of charge, power limits and household demand determine how much can be stored.
